Apple has internally prototyped a modified Apple Pencil for a future foldable iPhone, though its release with the device is unlikely, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The foldable iPhone is anticipated to debut on September 9.
The prototype for the Apple Pencil was described as
stubbier
than existing Apple Pencil models designed for iPads. This stylus was conceived to attach magnetically to the side of the foldable iPhone, allowing for both convenient storage and charging. However, this attachment method presents a notable practical challenge: it could interfere with the device's operation when the foldable iPhone is opened, particularly if the stylus is not actively in use. Gurman also highlighted concerns that a stylus could leave marks on the more delicate screens typically found on foldable devices. Other manufacturers, such as Samsung, have addressed similar issues by developing specific S Pens tailored exclusively for their foldable smartphones.
Beyond the development of a foldable iPhone stylus, Apple is also reportedly working on significant updates for its Apple Watch line, according to Gurman. The company is testing new color options for the ceramic cases of the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12, specifically white and dark gray.
On the software front, Apple is testing a new feature for its smartwatch that would enable the heart-rate sensor to continuously collect data throughout the day. This represents a shift from the current functionality, which typically records heart rate only during physical activity or at random intervals. Additionally, Apple is said to be revamping its fitness and health application to offer an experience more akin to apps from companies like Whoop and Oura, which focus on comprehensive health tracking.
Looking further ahead, a major redesign for the Apple Watch is expected next year. This significant overhaul, however, could be delayed until 2028.
