Shailene Woodley's scenes as Mary Jane Watson were ultimately cut from *The Amazing Spider-Man 2*, a decision she recently discussed during an episode of SAG-AFTRA's Conversations. The film, which featured Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, was already dense with plot and villains, leading to the removal of Woodley's character.
Woodley recalled that her casting as Mary Jane was not through an audition but rather an offer following a conversation with director Marc Webb. This experience was unsettling for her, as she had previously auditioned for all her roles. She noted that when an actor auditions and is chosen, there is no doubt about being the right person for the part. However, with an offer or a general meeting, the situation felt less clear, making her question if she was truly the director's choice or merely the studio's preference.
Despite these concerns, Woodley was a fan of Spider-Man and had admired Mary Jane since childhood, considering the role a dream opportunity. She expressed excitement upon securing the part. She filmed a few scenes alongside Garfield, with expectations that her character would have a more significant role in a prospective third *Amazing Spider-Man* movie.
Approximately a year after filming, Sony contacted Woodley to inform her that her Mary Jane scenes were being removed from *The Amazing Spider-Man 2*. The studio's stated reason was to provide a clean introduction for the character in the planned third installment. Woodley indicated that she understood this decision, even making a good-natured joke that the studio might have regretted casting her.
However, *The Amazing Spider-Man 3* was never produced. Currently, Tom Holland portrays Spider-Man, with Zendaya playing his version of Mary Jane. While Andrew Garfield later reprised his role in *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, Sony does not appear eager to bring him back for another solo film, despite Garfield reportedly remaining open to the possibility.
